Controls Technician

JOB PURPOSE:   Responsible for redesigning and modifying existing systems and providing technical assistance to the staff operating computerized automation systems.


  • Uses appropriate data system knowledge to maintain and adjust computer logic to improve operator feedback.  Uses engineering design software to create new controls drawings and to update existing drawings.
  • Reduces downtime by improving error messages to Production Maintenance to provide a clearer description of the equipment malfunction.
  • Trouble-shoots electrical controls problems on production machines.  Communicates verbally and in writing any deficiencies in the production equipment to supervisor, engineer, or other associates.  Involves bending, stooping, crouching and reaching to lift, access, inspect and to repair machinery weighing up to 70 lbs.
  • Receives oral and written instructions from managers, supervisors and engineers regarding production maintenance issues.
  • Uses relatively high degree of attention and concentration to maintain and update software on the production floor.  Creates backup programs for all production software programs in the event of a system failure.
  • Maintains and modifies all robotic software for the production floor.  Changes and recalculates points to ensure the robotic machinery is operating effectively.

Works in a clean, air conditioned, and well maintained production environment, wearing required personal safety equipment.

Knowledge – Requires good written and verbal communication.  Must have advanced computer literacy skills and an advanced knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems and practical applications.  Requires an associate’s degree in industrial engineering or electronics with 3 to 5 years in controls and/or manufacturing experience.  (Essential job functions – 1,2,3,4,5,6)

Mental – Requires a high degree of attention to detail to modify and analyze computer software, trouble-shoot production issues, and to update robotic programs.  (Essential job functions 1,2,3,5,6)

Physical – Requires walking and standing a majority of the time, lifting moderate weights up to 70 pounds occasionally, stooping and bending. (Essential job functions – 3,5,6)

Environmental – Requires capability of performing essential job functions in generally good plant and office environment, wearing required personal safety equipment. (Essential job functions – 1-7)

Manual Dexterity – Requires use of arms, hands, legs and feet for occasional lifting, use of hands and arms to operate keyboard and data system, telephone and to record written information for filing.  (Essential job functions – 1-7)

Audible/Visual – Requires ability to hear communications and instructions; ability to visually observe colored paint dots and colored parts as required to perform job effectively.  (Essential job functions 1,2,3,4)
